A while ago I read the article “Lo de “yo soy así y no voy a cambiar” es un cuento: la personalidad sí varía con los años” [“Saying “that’s the way I am and I’m not going to change” is a myth: personality does change over time”], and I found it comforting. Today I’d like to share my thoughts on a topic that interests me hugely and that I like to be aware of.
In Buddhism, it is believed that your acts define you and that it is within your power to change negative dynamics, thoughts and emotions into positive ones. I despair at mental resistance to change. I don’t understand how one can lose the will to question themselves, to change, to improve. I think it is important to not believe that you hold the absolute truth, to know how to look at yourself in the mirror and scrutinise yourself to change what you don’t like, because there is always time, and science corroborates that, according to what I read in the article.
It is wonderful to discover how malleable we can be at different stages of our life. I consider it a gift that our body gives us the opportunity to grow, evolve and continue learning. The philosophy in which I believe, the constant quest for wellbeing in which I find myself, also requires the mental part of course. Mental flexibility keeps you young and open to the world. Isn’t that nice? Recovering that curious approach children have to continue discovering within yourself and beyond.
